West Wilkes High School Electric Vehicle team began in 2005 to give at-risk and underserved high school students of the Appalachian Mountain region the opportunity to learn about different forms of alternative energy focusing on the transportation sector. Notable projects over the past 12 years include: three full size street legal electric vehicle conversions (and countless modifications and upgrades) receiving over 100 awards; solar charged remote control 1/10 scale racing vehicles that compete at the STEP Challenge at North Carolina State University; a STEM Cycle which is a single passenger electric vehicle that competes at the NC EV Challenge; Search and Rescue Robotic competition; and numerous electric golf cart modification projects. Each year the most devoted students will spend over 400 hours - totaling thousands of team hours (outside of normal school classroom time) working in the shop on projects, competing at events and presenting at school initiative events promoting alternative energy technologies.

Application Process: Applicant will submit: 1) A resume that outlines community involvement, jobs, and EV Team accomplishments. 2) Essay that explains why they deserve the scholarship. (Financial need may be considered) Selection Process: West Wilkes High School has a scholarship award committee that will review and make recommendations for the scholarship.
