Blast from the Past: Matthew returns on Christmas Break to visit and tour our new shop and his early high school creations.
Matthew was one of those students always in the shop if the doors were open. Now Matthew is an experienced Marine. Certainly boot camp trained him rigoroursly but at West Wilkes High School he learned first hand how to convert the Ford Ranger and Mazda Miata to electric without the help of shop heat, car lift or tool box full of tools. You might say his high school experience was cold (and hot at times) and lacking the tools necessary to succeed but he and his team found a way to make it happen which is the ultimate in problem solving...Priceless...
His wonderful new friend Liz was located in New York. She is a wonderful friendly soul originally from New Jersey. Liz learned a lot from touring the shop, Tolbert's barn/yard/home and seeing Matthew in his youthful pictures which are posted all around the new EV shop. We agreed that Matthew was about a foot taller since he graduated.
Matthew's plans are to finish his Marine tour in about 18 months. He then plans to attend a college. Tolbert highly encouraged him to consider Appstate for his solar car team. Time will tell but wouldn't it be cool for Tolbert to coach Matthew again and Matthew possibly returning to West to help coach the EV Team.
